EMDR Trauma Therapy

EMDR is best known for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and it can also help with a range of mental health conditions in people of all ages.

Transformative EMDR Therapy with a Personal Touch

As a highly experienced psychotherapist, I specialize in delivering EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, a proven and powerful method for overcoming trauma. With a track record of success, I offer a unique, tailored approach that combines EMDR with systemic and family psychotherapy. This enables me to address each client’s personal and relational context, ensuring a comprehensive healing experience.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is an evidence-based therapeutic technique designed to help individuals recover from the lasting effects of trauma and distressing life experiences. Trauma can sometimes overwhelm the brain’s natural processing abilities, leaving memories “stuck” and causing individuals to relive vivid and intense emotions associated with the event. These intrusive memories can resurface unexpectedly, disrupting daily life and emotional well-being.

How I Tailor EMDR to You

I believe that no two people experience trauma the same way, and I tailor each EMDR therapy plan to fit your unique needs. By integrating my background in systemic and family psychotherapy, I consider the broader context of your relationships and family dynamics—often key factors in the healing process.

Here’s how I guide you through EMDR therapy:

• Comprehensive Assessment: I begin by gaining a deep understanding of your history, struggles, and specific goals. This helps in creating a treatment plan designed just for you.
• Preparation: We’ll build a strong therapeutic relationship and equip you with coping strategies to manage any emotions that arise during the process.
• Desensitization & Reprocessing: Through bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones), we will work to reprocess distressing memories, reducing their emotional intensity.
• Installation: Positive beliefs are introduced to replace negative ones, fostering a healthier self-image and outlook.
• Body Scan: We address any lingering physical sensations linked to trauma, ensuring holistic relief.
• Closure & Reevaluation: Each session ends with a grounding phase, ensuring you leave feeling safe and stable. We’ll also regularly assess your progress and adjust the treatment as needed.

Why Choose EMDR?

• Resolve Trauma: EMDR helps you break free from the emotional weight of traumatic memories.
• Mental Health Benefits: Experience significant reductions in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
• Enhanced Coping Skills: Develop effective, lasting strategies to manage emotional distress and stress.
• Holistic Healing: By considering your family dynamics and broader relationships, EMDR fosters not just individual healing, but improved relationships and systemic balance.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps the brain “unstick” traumatic memories, allowing them to be processed properly so they lose their intense emotional charge. It also works to desensitize the emotional impact of these memories, so you can recall the event without feeling overwhelmed by distressing emotions.

During an EMDR session, you’ll be asked to recall the traumatic event while engaging in bilateral stimulation—this could involve moving your eyes from side to side, listening to sounds in alternate ears, or tapping on each hand alternately. These sensations stimulate the brain’s “stuck” processing system, allowing it to reprocess the memory in a more typical way, reducing its intensity and emotional hold over you.

The process is thought to be similar to what happens during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, when your brain naturally processes the events of the day. Some research suggests that by giving the brain multiple tasks to focus on during EMDR, the distressing memory becomes less vivid and more manageable over time.

How Can EMDR Help?

When mental health challenges stem from a traumatic or distressing life event, EMDR can provide relief quickly. Studies show that EMDR can significantly reduce symptoms of PTSD in just two or three sessions, with long-lasting effects. However, individuals with more complex trauma or childhood neglect may need additional sessions to achieve the same results.
